FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Matrescence?

Matrescence is a major life transition. A process. A becoming. An unravelling. A rite of passage.

It’s the deep, multi-layered transformation a woman undergoes as she moves through motherhood - psychologically, emotionally, physically, socially, economically, culturally, and spiritually. It is similar to adolescence in that it is a profound period of transition and identity shift. The term was first coined by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s, but it has gained more recognition in recent years as a way to describe the complex and often overlooked challenges of adjusting to motherhood. It is wild, beautiful, complex, and challenging.

Have I Already Moved Through Matrescence, Is It Too Late for Me to Do This Work?

Matrescence is a lifelong process, and it doesn’t have a clear endpoint. It’s the ongoing evolution of who you are as a mother and as an individual. You may feel like you’ve already moved through certain aspects of Matrescence, but as you continue to grow and shift, new layers of your journey may emerge. It’s never too late to do this work. Whether you're navigating new phases of motherhood, returning to work, or seeking more balance in your life, coaching can help you explore where you are now and what you need to move forward with clarity and confidence. Every stage of motherhood presents unique opportunities for growth, and I’m here to support you wherever you are on your journey.

What is Life Coaching for Mothers?

This coaching is a very supportive, client-centred process designed to help mothers navigate the identity shifts, challenges, and transformations that come with motherhood. It provides a safe space for self-exploration, personal growth, and aligned decision-making, empowering you to embrace this phase of life with confidence and clarity.

Is Coaching Like Therapy or Mentoring?

No, coaching is different from both therapy and mentoring. Therapy focuses on past experiences, trauma, and mental health conditions, providing clinical support for deeper emotional healing. Coaching, on the other hand, is future-focused, helping mothers navigate current challenges and work toward their visions & goals with actionable strategies. Unlike mentoring, which involves advice from someone with experience, coaching facilitates self-reflection, empowering you to uncover your own insights, strengths, and solutions. In coaching, you are the expert in your own life, and the coach supports you in discovering what works best for you.

Will You Give me Advice or Tell Me What To Do?

No. Coaching is about guiding you to find your own answers, rather than giving prescriptive advice. The coaching process is about asking powerful questions, offering perspectives, challenging ingrained mindsets and creating a space where you can develop self-awareness and confidence in your own decision-making.

What Can I Expect from a Life Coaching Session?

In your first session, we’ll explore your vision, intentions for life, and the areas you’d like to shift or change. Each session thereafter is a structured conversation where we reflect on insights, learnings, and challenges since the last session and set new, meaningful steps toward your goals. My role as the coach is to ask you thought-provoking questions, offer reflections, and help you identify action steps. Every session is designed to provide clarity, empowerment, and momentum toward your goals.

How Do I Prepare for a Coaching Session?

Create a quiet, uninterrupted space where you can fully focus. If possible, arrange for someone to look after your children. Make this time sacred—light a candle, burn essential oils, and have a journal and pen ready to capture insights and action steps.

Do I Need to Do Anything Between Sessions?

Yes. Success in achieving your life coaching goals depends on your commitment to the process - reflecting on insights, taking action, and noticing shifts in your thoughts and experiences. The more you engage with the work, the more transformative your coaching journey will be. A lot of growth can happen between sessions.

  • Are ready to explore your identity, values, and aspirations.
  • Need support in navigating the changes that come with becoming a mother.

Is This Right for Me if I’m in the First 12 Months Postpartum?

In the first year postpartum, you are often focused on being present, bonding with your baby, and adjusting to this new chapter. It’s a time to embrace the beauty of early motherhood without the pressure of thinking too far ahead.

From my experience, this coaching work is most impactful when you begin to feel the pull toward integrating other elements of your life—returning to work, rediscovering yourself beyond motherhood, or navigating the evolving challenges that come with this shift. When you're ready for that space, coaching can support you in moving forward with clarity and confidence.

However, every journey is unique. If you’re feeling deeply called to this work in your first 12 months postpartum, I’d love to speak with you and explore how coaching can best support you at this stage.

What Commitment is Required for This Process?

If we both decide to proceed after the initial introductory call, we will move forward with signing a coaching agreement. This agreement outlines the commitment required for the coaching process, including completing all sessions in a series. Your commitment to the process ensures the best possible results, as consistency and follow-through are key to creating lasting change and growth.

Is Coaching a Worthwhile Investment?

Investing in coaching is investing in your well-being, growth, and confidence as you navigate motherhood.

It’s easy to prioritise others, but when you invest in yourself, you’re also investing in your family and future.

Coaching provides a dedicated space to be heard, supported, and empowered - offering lasting tools & mindset shifts beyond one-off self-care moments.

If cost is a concern, I invite you to consider:

  • What else would you spend this money on? A few dinners out, a gym membership, beauty treatments, streaming services, or impulse purchases? Coaching provides lifelong benefits for your mental and emotional well-being.

  • The cost of not investing: Staying stuck in overwhelm, self-doubt, or burnout impacts your well-being and relationships.

.

  • Reframing this investment: We often spend on things for our children - clothes, toys, or activities - as well as material comforts like home décor, gadgets, or fashion - coaching nurtures your inner well-being, supporting everything else.

Your health and happiness are not luxuries - they are essential. Thriving in motherhood requires support, reflection, and growth.

How Are Payments Made?

Payments are made via direct debit to my nominated account. I will send you an invoice and a reminder each month in advance of our next session.
